So there it is, way in the distance. You can see the flag and the variations in the surrounding terrain, but how far away is the hole?
In golf, you’re only as good as the accuracy of your next shot.
Sometimes the surrounding terrain can be deceptive and throw off your guesstimate as to how far of a shot you have in front of you.
Enter Nikon’s Callaway LR550 rangefinder. Its primary focus is to help you determine distances and it does so with a reliability of +/- .5 yards from up to 550 yards away.
This is of critical importance as GPS rangefinders can be off by as much as 10 or 15 yards when playing a large golf course. That’s a one club difference and that amount of error can result in over or undershooting the hole. The LR550 has a tight range of accuracy that works well on large and small courses.
The Callaway rangefinder works based on laser technology that is line-of-sight and legal in tournaments that allow it by Local Rule. Also, laser doesn’t rely on GPS, which means there is no subscription to extra services. The LR550 viewfinder offers a six-degree field of view with 6x magnification.
The LCD screen displays distances in .5 yard increments. Nikon has integrated a target priority mode that distances a single target in the foreground and ignores items in the background. It also contains a continuous mode that distances multiple targets over an eight-second duration. This helps when it’s necessary to scan complicated terrain, such as hills and sand traps leading to the hole.
The rangefinder is offered in both yellow (LR550Y) and pearl white (LR550W). The yellow model features a bright Neoprene case. The white model comes with a blue and white case more suited for females. It is powered by one 3-Volt CR2 Lithium Ion battery. It is a small, lightweight unit that fits easily in a golf bag or pocket.
While there are many golf rangefinders on the market, the Callaway LR550 stands out as a premium distancing tool that will surely enhance your ability to hit that flagstick.

Golfer Reviews:
User reviews are quite favorable for the Callaway LR550.
Melissa said this about the rangefinder:
“The Callaway LR550 is far superior to Bushnell’s products. I have two Bushnell rangefinders and they don’t perform well when the temperature is over 80 degrees or if there’s too much moisture in the air. I love the one-touch feature that continuously scans the area for many seconds. The readout is also easy to see and I don’t have to wear my glasses.”(This review has been paraphrased. E. Mendez of Jacksonville, FL had this to say:
“This rangefinder is wonderful to use! The eight-second scan mode makes distancing a target so easy and seeing it in the viewfinder is not a problem. The bright yellow exterior makes it difficult to accidently leave in the golf cart. Also, the waterproof feature makes the occasional rainstorm no problem at all.”(This review has been paraphrased.
